How to Build a Charm Bracelet or Necklace

Ring Advice

Jewelry shopping can be intimidating. That’s why we started Ask Holden, our blog where we answer your FAQs, break down scary industry lingo, and guide you in finding the perfect piece of jewelry.

If you’re looking for where to buy jewelry charms, you’ve come to the right place! At Holden, customizability is always at the core of what we do: you get to choose your desired charm placement (bracelet or chain necklace), size, and metal. How you choose to build your charm bracelet or necklace over time is also up to you, since our charms are sold individually (excluding The BFF Tags).

Charms can breathe new life into your jewelry pieces and make great milestone gifts! But if you’re unsure where to start with building a charm necklace or bracelet, we wanted to provide a few ideas on mixing and matching our charm styles to craft a personalized jewelry design that’s just for you.

Customize Your Charms (or Pendants)

Now that you know where to buy gold charms and chains, we’ll move on to the next step: how to make a bracelet with charms. This is the fun part, and the great thing about charm jewelry is that the fun never has to end!

You can mix and match and swap your jewelry charms out at your whim, making these pieces incredibly versatile. Charms add personality to your pieces, turning basics into statements (and back again if you please!).

Feeling overwhelmed with our selection of charms, or lacking in customization inspiration? Don’t worry! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

For The Small Letter Charm, The Large Letter Charm, or The Diamond Letter Charm:

1. A word/name (e.g. LOVE, BFF, MEG)

2. A place (e.g. NYC, LA)

3. Your/a loved one’s initials

Choose Your Chain

Now that you have a good idea of how you want to personalize your charms, let’s talk a bit about the chain you’re planning to put them on.

If you already happen to have a bracelet or necklace that you’d like to add a gold charm to, go for it! We’re all about sustainability here, so we definitely endorse the idea of resuscitating your existing jewelry pieces in favor of purchasing something new.

However, if you’re more of a maximalist, we also really love the look of stacking or layering your chain bracelets or pendant necklaces. If you’re in the market for a new chain, we have plenty of bracelet and necklace styles to choose from!

All our charms are compatible with The Paperclip Bracelet, The Rolo Bracelet, and most standard charm bracelets. Our lobster-style clasp is also perfect for affixing multiple charms to The Paperclip Necklace.

If you'd like to wear your charm as a pendant on a necklace, we recommend purchasing it with a bail. Our standard bail is compatible with chains up to 3mm in width (unless you want to purchase a separate jump ring, in which case you can go wider).

All our charms and chains are made from solid, high quality 14k gold. The color is totally up to you, though: choose between rose gold, yellow gold, or white gold. (Just so you know, white gold appears visually similar to sterling silver color-wise!)

Once you’ve determined the style of chain you want, and whether you’d prefer a bracelet or necklace, you’re ready to check out for your charms and pendants!
