Our Favorite Celebrity Engagement Rings - Sorted by Diamond Shape

Ring Advice

Here at Holden, we love diamonds, we love celebrities, and we love celebrity diamonds. Here’s our list of diamond shapes and the celebrities who rock them for their engagement rings.

Round

The most popular of all the diamond shapes (as in 75% of the world’s diamonds), the round diamond is a classic - and it’s cut to maximize brilliance and fire.

Miranda KerrThe Victoria’s Secret model married CEO of Snap Evan Spiegel after he proposed in 2016 with a 2.5 carat round diamond ring featuring two tapered baguettes on a platinum band. The estimated value of the ring was $75,000-100,000.

Emily Blunt - John Krasinski proposed to Blunt in 2009 with a $100,000 platinum ring featuring a three carat round diamond stone flanked by baguettes.

Mila Kunis - Kunis’s That 70’s Show co-star Ashton Kutcher proposed in 2014 with a five carat round cut diamond set on a platinum band valued at $260,000. The pair then opted for wedding bands that cost less than $100 on Etsy to exchange on their wedding day.

Jamie Chung - Fellow actor Bryan Greenberg proposed to Chung in 2013 with a round stone in a halo setting on a split-shank band. The pair were wed in 2015.

Jeremy O’HarrisThe playwright’s engagement ring from Arvand Khosravi features a round diamond stone surrounded by onyx and sapphire stones. Playwright Adrienne Kennedy even wrote a personalized message that’s engraved on the interior of the ring (psst…we offer free engravings at Holden!).

Oval

An oval-shaped diamond is essentially an elongated brilliant-cut stone meant to symbolize the longevity of the wearer’s relationship. It was first introduced in the 1900s.

Hailey BeiberJustin Bieber proposed to Hailey Baldwin with a six to ten carat oval ring in July 2018. Hailey walked down the aisle in 2019 in a custom gown designed by Virgil Abloh. The estimated value of the ring? $250,000-500,000

Blake Lively - Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively were married in September 2012 after Reynolds proposed with a 12 carat oval cut diamond with a micro-pavé band valued at $2 million.

Kate MiddletonPrince William proposed to the now Duchess of Cambridge with his mother Princess Diana’s engagement ring, an 18 carat oval sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds. The couple was wed in 2011.

Simone BilesGymnast (and amazing mental health advocate!) said yes to football player Jonathan Owens in 2022 after he proposed with a three carat oval ring (surrounded by a diamond halo) valued at $300,000.

Ariana Grande - After singing “one day I'll walk down the aisle holding hands with my mama” in “Thank U, Next,” Ariana met real estate agent Dalton Gomez, who proposed in 2020 with a toi et moi ring featuring a five to seven carat oval stone and a pearl. Both of Grande’s parents ended up walking her down the aisle.

Salma HayakFrench businessman François-Henri Pinault proposed to Hayek with a five carat oval stone featuring two trillion diamond accents on the side. The pair were wed on Valentine’s Day in 2009.

Pear

Pointed on one end and rounded on the other, a pear-shaped diamond is a mix between an oval and a marquise diamond. First introduced in the 1400s, this stone shape has regained popularity in recent years, partially thanks to these celebrities who have rocked this unique shape.

Sophie Turner - Singer Joe Jonas proposed to Game of Thrones queen Sophie Turner with a three carat pear shaped diamond set between two diamond-studded bands with an estimated value of $150,000.

Victoria BeckhamPosh Spice and soccer player David Beckham were married in 1999, but he’s given her at least 13(!) engagement rings over the years. One of our favorites was a 17 carat pear-shaped diamond valued at $2.7 million.

Margot RobbieMargot Robbie’s producer husband Tom Ackerley proposed with a 1.5 carat pear-shaped ring on a pavé diamond band. While most people tend to wear the point towards their fingertips, Margot chooses to wear the point of her pear-shaped stone towards her wrist.

Zoe SaldanaZoe Saldana’s engagement ring from Marco Perego Saldana features an eight to ten carat pear-shaped emerald stone. The green stone is surrounded by a diamond halo setting and an eternity band. All in, the ring is valued at $250,000.

Elizabeth Taylor - One of Taylor’s many famous engagement rings is the 69 carat pear shaped ring Richard Burton gave her. Apparently, the ring was borne from a dinnertime argument: Burton told Taylor her hands were large and unattractive (rude!), so she told him to put a 69 carat diamond on her finger to make her hands look more dainty (an excellent comeback). He did, but 69 carats is far too heavy to lug around on your finger, so Liz eventually turned it into a necklace. The stone’s estimated worth today is $18.9M.

Cushion

One of the most popular vintage stone shapes, a cushion cut diamond features rounded corners but isn’t completely round. This shape was first introduced in the 1800s and has remained a favorite ever since.

Sofia VergaraModern Family star Sofia Vergara married fellow actor Joe Manganiello in 2015. Her engagement ring is a seven carat cushion cut featuring a micro-pave halo valued at $500k.

Meghan MarklePrince Harry proposed to the American actress in 2017 with a three carat cushion cut center stone ring featuring 0.5-.75 carat side diamonds. The side stones were heirlooms from his mother, Princess Diana.

Asscher

An Asscher stone looks similar to an emerald cut but features larger facets and a higher crown. One of the most famous recent wearers was Carrie Bradshaw (although Sarah Jessica Parker’s own engagement ring is an emerald cut diamond).

Pippa MiddletonKate Middleton’s sister married race car driver James Matthews after he proposed with a three carat Asscher cut diamond surrounded by a cluster of smaller diamonds valued at $260k.

Gwyneth Paltrow - Although Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin have since gone through a conscious uncoupling, Paltrow’s engagement ring, a $90,000 Asscher cut diamond on a double pavé band, lives on.

Jessica AlbaFilm producer Cash Warren proposed to Alba in 2008 with a five carat Asscher cut stone set in a halo on a diamond band.

Nicky HiltonHotel heiress Nicky Hilton was spotted wearing a six carat Asscher engagement ring on *that* finger after banking heir James Rothschild proposed on Lake Como in 2015. It features two trillion cut side diamonds and is valued at $500,000-$800,000.

Elizabeth Taylor Asscher Cut Engagement Ring

Elizabeth Taylor - Here come Liz and Dick again! While not technically an engagement ring, Richard Burton gave Taylor a 33 carat Asscher cut ring in 1968, which sold for $6.8M in 2011.

Emerald Cut

Named for how emeralds grow naturally, this rectangular shape has a distinct art deco vibe. Emerald shaped diamonds are less sparkly than some other popular shapes but have a distinctly understated elegance.

Amal Clooney - George Clooney proposed to this powerhouse lawyer in 2014 with a $175,000 ring featuring a seven carat emerald stone flanked by 2 tapered baguettes.

Beyoncé - Beyoncé married Jay-Z in 2008 after the rapper proposed with an 18 carat emerald cut stone valued at $5 million. We’re glad Jay-Z decided to…put a ring on it (sorry, but we absolutely had to).

Serena Williams - The tennis star and one of the greatest athletes of all time said yes to entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian in 2016 after he presented her with a grand slam 10 carat emerald cut diamond.

Grace Kelly - Kelly became a princess when she wed Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956. The prince proposed with a ring fit for royalty (worth $4 million) featuring a 10.47 carat emerald stone.

Elizabeth TaylorWhy yes, Elizabeth Taylor IS on this list thrice. She had some impressive jewelry! Producer Mike Todd proposed in 1957 with a 29.4 carat emerald ring, which Liz lovingly referred to as her “ice skating rink.” The ring sold in 2011 for $3.7 million.

Radiant Cut

Introduced in 1977, the radiant cut is one of the sparkliest shapes out there. It’s similar in shape to an emerald cut diamond with facets that give it much of the sparkle and shine of a round diamond.

Jennifer AnistonJustin Theroux proposed to Aniston in 2012 with an engagement ring featuring an eight carat radiant cut stone valued at $500,000. The pair have since split.

Drew Barrymore - Barrymore married Will Kopelman in 2012 after he proposed with a four carat radiant cut diamond. While they are no longer together, the pair have two children together.

Baguette

Not often used as an engagement ring center stone, the baguette is a shape more commonly used in an eternity band or flush setting. That said, we love a break from tradition and have seen couples use our Column Baguette and Row Baguette rings as engagement rings frequently!

Marilyn MonroeMonroe married baseball player Joe Dimaggio in 1954. It appears he didn’t give her a traditional engagement ring at all and instead opted for diamonds on their wedding day: he slipped a platinum eternity band featuring 36 baguette stones on her finger.

Jonathan BennettMean Girls star Bennett (yes, his hair looks sexy pushed back!) came out in 2014 and announced his engagement to James Vaughan in 2020 (no, not on October 3rd). While it’s not a Holden ring, Bennett’s engagement ring looks quite similar to our flush baguette design!

Marquise

Named for the smile of Marquise de Pompadour, King Louis XIV’s mistress, this stone features a rounded center and two pointed ends. This unique and less common stone shape makes a great choice for a less traditional engagement ring.

Catherine Zeta-Jones - Michael Douglas proposed to Zeta-Jones with a ring featuring a 10 carat marquise diamond surrounded by 28 smaller stones. The ring is reportedly worth $1 million, and the pair wed in 2000.

Jackie Onassis - Jackie’s engagement ring from Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis featured a 40.42 carat marquise stone cut from the South African Lesotho brown diamond - a 601 carat rough stone. Because the ring was so heavy, Onassis only wore it twice. It has since sold for $2.59 million.

Portia de RossiEllen Degeneres proposed to de Rossi with a three carat marquise diamond horizontally set and accented with small pink diamonds in 2008.
